Seven Minutes Is Already Enough

You have been telling yourself you do not have time for this.

The story arrived a long time ago. Meditation belongs to people who can sit for an hour. People with cushions and apps and quiet rooms. People who have figured out something you have not. So the seven minutes you might have given it become zero, because zero is easier to defend than a small effort that might still feel like failing.

Researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences put electrodes on the heads of meditators at three experience levels and asked them to watch the breath. The pattern showed up in the EEG within two to three minutes. Alpha and theta activity rose. The mind began to settle. By around seven minutes, the shift was measurable across all three groups, beginners included. The brain did not wait for expertise. It responded to the invitation.

Sit with that for a second. The brain did not wait. It is more willing than the story you have been telling about it.

This is the quiet thing the research does to a long-standing belief. The voice in your head saying you don't have time for this, you'll just be bad at it, you should wait until you're calmer to start is not telling the truth about your nervous system. It is telling the truth about how guilt works. The inner courtroom prefers a tall barrier to entry, because a tall barrier means you cannot try and therefore cannot fail. Two minutes is a small enough door that the prosecutor cannot block it.

What this means for you is smaller and more practical than most teachings on meditation suggest. You do not need a cushion. You do not need an hour. You do not need to feel calm before you start, or feel calm at the end, or report to anyone what happened. You need a chair, a breath, and a willingness to let the first two minutes be ordinary. The shift the research describes is not a feeling of bliss. It is a quieter signal in the brain, the kind your body can use later when the day asks something of you.

Some days the seven minutes will feel long. Some days they will pass before you notice. Both are the practice. The chain breaks through repetition of new choices, not through one transcendent sitting. The traveler keeps walking.
